Robert Owens – Deep Down (Chocolate Puma Main Mix)

Though electronica has typically been a producer’s medium (and the few vocalists who succeed are usually women), Robert Owens became one of the people associated with the late-’80s golden era of Chicago house. Born in Ohio in 1961, Robert Owens grew up singing in church, but years later, he was working as a DJ in 1985, when he met Chicago producer Larry Heard. The pair formed Fingers Inc., along with Ron Wilson, and they released a few singles (“You’re Mine”/”It’s Over”) plus the 1988 full-length “Another Side”. The group disbanded quickly, as Heard’s burgeoning solo-production career (as Mr. Fingers) took priority.

Chocolate Puma Featuring Colonel Red – Back Home

Fela Kuti riffs seem all the rage at the moment, although you could justifiably ask when they weren’t. As this is Chocolate Puma we’re talking about however, don’t expect any pretty afro-ethno beats. Do expect the normal Puma attack of big drums, big drops and fast-firing key riffs plus a counter-balancing melodic vocal hook from Colonel Red and a little frisson of the revving motorcycle/geiger counter effect popularised a year or two back. Classic Chocolate Puma, in short.

DJ Mag.

Chocolate Puma vs Baggi Begovic ft Mitch Crown – Solarianism

As DJ’s Chocolate Puma is privileged to be able choose from all these hundreds of records to make sure they maintain and create a unique sound.

The true nature of their inspiration will always be a secret to them but Zki & Dobre have the gift of always reinventing themselves. Some highlights so far: the classic Vallee de Larmes (1993), the Jark Prongo project including Movin’ Thru Your System (1998) and Sweet Little Thing (2001), Chocolate Puma with the floor fillers I Wanna Be U, A Star Is Born and Always & Forever to name a couple. They also gained success with projects like Basco, Klatsch! and Tomba Vira.

One thing is clear though and that is that everything Zki & Dobre create stands for quality. Today a whole new generation appreciates the music of Zki and Dobre without knowing the full history of it.
